Colour On The Runway

All eyes were on London as Spring Summer 2013 Fashion Week commenced, designer; Philip Treacy caused a stir in the fashion world. Considering this was his first show in London in 12 years, he definitely came back with a bang! Treacy who is known for dressing the heads of the Royal’s and societies elite in particular last year’s royal wedding, broke the mould and used all black models in his SS13 runway show. Some of you may think that this is not a big deal, but it is apparent there are two big issues that plague the fashion industry, one of them weight and the other race, so it was refreshing, empowering and inspiring to see a strong army of 25 black women strutting down Treacy runway to the memorable beats of Michael Jackson showcasing his most iconic stage outfits.

Even though Lady Gaga opened the show fully draped in a pink veil, the real focus was on the inspiring black models used from; Leonie Anderson, Betty Adewole and Jourdan Dunn not to mention Naomi Campbell, Alek Wek and Grace Jones just to name a few. Treacy only explanation of the choice to use solely black women in the show; ‘was a homage to the African woman and their sensibility to dress up’’ (Source Evening Standard) not that it really needed an explanation, but nicely said indeed. One of the most memorable pieces from his collection would have to be the oversized fascinators, hand shaped in Swarovski encrusted jewelled hand modelled by Alek Wek, and Jourdan Dunn in a trombone mouth piece.

Vogue Italia - 'All Black' Issue

As this is Black History Month in the UK, it is important we celebrate and recognise achievements such as these. It is apparent women and men of colour are under-represented in the fashion industry, while we praise Treacy for stepping out of the norm and Vogue Italia for their ‘All Black Issue’ the real sign of progress is when begin to see black women and men integrated into the runway on a regular basis, rather than it being a sense of tokenism. So designers and fashionistas take note and follow the trend for Autumn Winter 2013 Fashion Week.

Bonner Brothers International Hair Show Round Up!!

Black Hair Rocks made it all the way to The Bronner Brothers International Summer Hair Show, in Atlanta Georgia; also celebrating their 65th Anniversary. Apparently this is one of the biggest black Hair Shows so off course we needed to check it out. Since this would be the first time attending, Black Hair Rocks was unsure what to expect, but indeed it exceeded all expectations. The show took place over four days, running from the 4th-7th of August, at the World Congress Centre. Live hair competitions, business seminars, hair battles, live demonstrations, were all on offer. As well as hundreds of black hair care companies, many of which are unknown in the UK, but there was strong emphasis on using natural ingredients, which was great to see.

Centre Cynthia  Bailey from 'The Real Housewives of Atlanta'

The atmosphere and vibe was unreal, it was amazing to witness a hair show on that grand scale all in the name of hair and beauty. The show was not just geared towards woman, men’s haircare and barbering techniques also played a big part. So many talented stylists showcasing their skills; never seen a weave done in 60minutes, then restyled in 10minutes and still look good. Cynthia Bailey from ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta ‘made a surprise appearance and presented a cheque for the ‘Remy Rain’ hair competition. She was also promoting her new premium collection of virgin hair extensions ‘Hair Couture’. And rocking one of her own hair collection, I can say her hair looked amazing. Tannesh Thomas from ‘The Bad Girls Club’ also judged and presented the competition, her wit, one liners and humour added to make it a memorable competition.

Right - Lisa Price Founder of Carols Daughter

One of the biggest highlights would have to be meeting Carols Daughter founder Lisa Price, the live hair competition creating a red carpet style in 60minutes and the barber battle. We were even lucky enough to win a goody bag courtesy of ‘Black Hair Magazine’, bagged a few freebies, and picked up loads of tips and info on how to promote and maintain healthy hair!

Hot of the press pictures you do not want to miss coming straight to you from the Bronner Brothers International Hair show. Brace yourselves some of the styles are out there, but all the same still very creative.

Oscars Hair Trends

I love the awards season - the most glam stars always pull out all the stops to make sure they look their best, and have to create different looks for each of the ceremonies.
